“10,000 Tents by…NOW :-)” – shauninthecity.com

Shaun has posted that they are taking no more donations at this time.  I will keep you all updated when the next shipment is slated and when more tents and donations will be needed.  Please do read the post below anyway.   Good story. Good people. :)

I wanted to write this post about a very special person doing something extremely awesome for the people of Haiti.  The earthquake survivors in and around Port-au-Prince (as well as those there helping them) are currently living in “Tent Cities” constructed of whatever they can find holding up sheets.  Some of the people don’t even have this much.

That brings me to introduce to you Shaun King of Shaun in the City ( http://shauninthecity.com ).  He has quite a story, which you can read on his site, and is going above and beyond to get TEN THOUSAND, yes, 10,000, 10 thousands, one-thousand times ten, TEN THOUSAND tents together to send down to Haiti on a cruise liner so the people will have shelter.  He has cleared the space with the Cruise line and is looking for people to buy tents and bring them to the drop-off points, buy tents online and have them shipped to one of the drop-off locations in the South Florida area, or to make donations, 100% of which will go to purchasing tents to go on the boat down there.

Excerpt:

“Most folk are just using tarps or sheets with sticks and they aren’t very secure from bugs/impending rain, don’t provide much privacy, etc. Just put yourself there in your mind and you’ll get the picture.  Would you like living under a sheet for all to see?

I want [the people of Haiti] to have some tents like the ones pictured here on my blog. They aren’t quite home, but they’re better.

So – get this – a large cargo ship is making space for us to ship 10,000 tents to Haiti on Wednesday morning from the ports in Miami, FL. This is INSANE. Likely – impossible. Going to take a miracle to pull it off.

Just my type of odds :-)

You see, Shaun King survived a horrific car accident a few years back, and he’ll tell you all about it.  He survived and experienced a MIRACLE.  I may not be a very religious person, but I believe there is something bigger than all of us out there and that MIRACLES CAN HAPPEN.  Some are in our hands, some are not.  This one IS, so let’s work with Shaun to give back to people who need a miracle too.

If you can’t buy a tent or donate, then do something nice for your neighbor, family member, or friend.  Spread the love, joy, and hope that comes with the privilege of being alive.
