@Steve: Thanks for dropping by! I'm glad to hear about the longevity of the soles themselves. I was thinking that since the rubber itself was so thin, it may not have the same durability as a set of tires but thank you for clearing that up for me. As for slapping, it's definitely partially a form issue, partially a tying issue (it seems). My right side always hurts a little more after a run session whether I'm shod, barefoot, or in the huaraches, I just know my right leg will be hurting a little more and that's something I am working on. The other part is tying, I've noticed that my right huarache loosens up more than my left one does so I need to find the right amount of tension and knot to get them to stay. The only reason I thought it may be a huarache issue is that I read quite a few reviews of huaraches of all makes that mentioned those of thinner soles will typically make a little more noise since they're not as stiff naturally, which only makes sense. But I have noticed that it's only once my huarache lace loosens up that the flopping begins, and I don't recall it ever occurring on my left foot. Perhaps my right foot sweats more!

I am going to work on tying my right huarache closer to the mid-line of the foot to see if that helps both with keeping it tight and maintaining proper tension on the lace, but I do appreciate the tips and I am loving moving around in these things. It's like rubbery heaven.

@Viper, the tying method is definitely something that seems very individualized. I cannot tell you how many videos I've seen on Youtube on how to tie these differently, even with little variations in the typical Raramuri fashion. BHI is one of my constant reads as we share a definite bond: great tasting specialty brews. And also oddball training techniques.

Thanks so much for your review.

FWIW, we expect the soles to last for thousands of miles of use. We made the new FeelTrue soles as an improvement of the Vibram in our Classics... we haven't had one person wear out the Classics and since the FeelTrue have better abrasion resistance, we're confident they'll have even better performance.

Regarding slapping noises... unless you've tied things too loosely, that *could* be a form issue. That is, in the same way that when you run barefoot, the painful sensations you could get are a "cue" for you to change your form so that it stops hurting (the idea being that when you make it stop hurting, you're running with better form), the sound of huaraches is the same. You can run quietly in them and if that's not happening, one thing to consider and experiment with is form (most of the time, overstriding -- reaching out too far with your foot -- is the culprit).

Also, you may want to try tightening the lace that comes from the inside of your ankle and goes around the "toe strap". This will change the angle of the toe strap so that it goes straight back toward your ankle and then, at the knot, changes direction to head toward the outside ankle hole. This may prove to be more stable.

Oh, and while the lace will eventually wear out (rumor has it that nothing in the world is permanent ;-)), we try to make replacements affordable at only $2.49 USD).

Hope that helps!

Nice review. The proper tying method seems to be pretty individual. Hope you get that flapping taken care of. Thanks for stopping by BHI Team HQ. Cheers!
